Ever hit a slump and all you want is an energy drink laced with sugar and caffeine to wake you up? And it's just the start of the day! Reaching for an energy drink can be convenient, but it can also have long-lasting health effects that can leave you perpetually tired.
We have put together a list of healthy energy drinks that you can make at home for breakfast to keep you going throughout the day.
The kick-starter
Even for someone who is a morning bird, there are days where getting out of bed is a drag. According to a survey conducted by The Bed Shop, 80% of South Africans wake up feeling tired and unrested in the morning. Furthermore, 60% are experiencing poor sleep. This can cause an increase in injury, illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and heart disease.
Having a protein shake that consists of banana, kale, almonds, plain yoghurt and milk of your choice can give you the needed boost that you need to start the day. Kick-starting your day with a healthy breakfast and home-made energy drink is beneficial. Keep in mind that you need at least 8 - 9 hours of sleep to let your body fully recharge.
Keep it going, keep it flowing
A hydrated body is a happy body. Keeping a constant flow of liquids, but steering away from sweet hot beverages and cooldrinks, can give you the boost you need during the day without your energy levels crashing.

This will also help you get a good dose of vitamins and help boost your electrolytes which are important to maintaining your energy levels. Replenishing your electrolytes can help you overcome fatigue cramps, and dizziness to name a few.
The hug-in-a-mug
On days where you wish you could be indoors wrapped in bed or days that feel like are taking forever to end, you could grab something hot. Fix yourself a hot cup of your own home-made energy drink to hug your soul. By mixing 1 ½ -2 tsp of honey, ginger root, ¼ teaspoons of ground cardamom and ¼ teaspoons of turmeric for a non-caffeine or refined sugar pick up. Close your eyes to enjoy every sip and ward off negative energies.
Remember to come prepared with a blender bottle that has a ball whisk inside to help blend your drinks, or drink on it as soon as you have finished making your drink.
